Keep Your Workforce Safe

Safety is everyone’s responsibility and worksite safety is always in season.

According to OSHA, employers have the responsibility to provide a safe and healthful workplace that is free from serious recognized hazards. OSHA estimates that each year 6,000 employees in the United States die from workplace injuries while another 50,000 die from illnesses caused by exposure to workplace hazards. In addition, 6 million workers suffer non-fatal workplace injuries at an annual cost to U.S. businesses of more than $125 billion. It is because of this, and to preserve human life and resources, that effective job safety adds value to the workplace.

According to OSHA 22 million workers are exposed to potentially damaging noise at work each year. Last year, U.S. businesses paid more than $1.5 million in penalties for not protecting workers from noise. In addition, it is estimated that $242 million is spend annually on workers' compensation for hearing loss disability.

While some states have enacted occupational safety and health laws, all standards are at least as effective as those under federal law. Employers must provide employees with jobs and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that are causing, or are likely to cause, death or serious physical harm. Examples of requirements include:

  • Providing well-maintained tools and equipment, including appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Providing medical examinations
  • Providing training required by OSHA standards
  • Submitting accident reports to OSHA that result in fatalities within 8 hours
  • Reporting accidents resulting with in-patient hospitalization, amputation, or eye loss to OSHA within 24 hours
  • Keeping records of work-related accidents, injuries and illnesses

As an employee, it is your duty to contribute to workplace safety, help prevent exposure to health hazards, as well as comply with all OSHA requirements that apply to your position.
