In places with little or no lighting, a flashlight can provide temporary illumination. Using these lights is useful in emergency situations, for navigation at night, for maintenance, and for security patrols. Using handheld flashlights, you can illuminate dark cabinets and enclosures in dark areas. In addition to keeping both hands free, headlamps and helmets also include lights to direct a beam forward. Penlights and inspection lights cast small, concentrated beams of light into tight spaces. Light produced by spotlights and lanterns is more readable from a distance or across more ground than light produced by handheld flashlights.
